Word of Mouth Recommendation is best marketing tool

Word-of-mouth recommendations are more important than ever as consumers increasingly look for products which have been recommended to them by their friends, an expert has commented.

Debra Aho Williamson, senior analyst at eMarketer, told UTalkMarketing.com that the spread of social networking sites, blogs and other forms of user-generated content (USG) means that recommendations are vital.

Several studies have found recommendations from a friend are more important to consumers than adverts and that they are more receptive to such information, UTalkMarketing.com reports.

It states that 59 per cent of retailers agree that USG leads to better search engine optimisation.

"Ms Williamson cautions that marketers who willingly insert their brand in online forums take the risk of consumers making negative remarks," the site warns.

Microsoft claims that word-of-mouth marketing can be an "affordable, powerful tool" for a business.

It suggests firms invite people to discuss their products or services through communication methods such as the company blog.
