Web site launches entrepreneurs into success
By Taylor White / newsnet.byu.edu
26 Mar 2009
Becoming a successful entrepreneur can be a difficult task, especially in rough economic times.
To help prospective risk takers, launchup.org is a new organization that aims to assist entrepreneurs in becoming successful in their businesses. Created by Jeremy Hanks, launchup.org is an evolving organization that hopes to bring together the community to help build successful businesses.
Hanks compares launchup.org to the act of barn raising, which occurred when members of the community came together to help assemble a barn. This practice took place in rural America in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Despite economy, new startups retain optimism (AP)
Posted on Thu Mar 19, 2009 12:31PM EDT
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - With many established businesses just trying to survive, you might not think it's a good time to start a company, let alone ask anyone for money to help get it rolling. But if a series of presentations from fledgling Silicon Valley startups is any indication, innovation is not braking for the recession.
Over three hours Wednesday, more than a dozen startup founders — most of them in their 20s — gave rapid-fire talks to a group of peers, journalists and potential investors about their companies.
Many of these startups are just a few months old, and some have not yet launched. Those on display ranged from an online marketplace selling gourmet treats to a company offering Web-based voice conferencing. Another is developing dating applications for the iPhone.

Palo Alto entrepreneur makes bundle ripping CDs for Barry Bonds, Elton John, wealthy Silicon Valley CEOs
By Richard Scheinin / Mercury News

If you had tons of extra cash amid this crazy, tumbling economy, one of the things you'd certainly do with it is get your CDs, all 12,000 of them, ripped to your computer hard drive and cataloged so you would no longer have to mess with the plastic. Not a bad idea, right?
Turns out, Jeff Tedesco, an ex-computer sales executive, is merrily ripping away at his offices in a converted cannery off El Camino Real in Palo Alto. Tedesco, who calls his business ReadyToPlay, has become one of the top people in the ripping trade because of the deluxe way in which he rips the discs — and then "grooms" and organizes the information from thousands of CDs for picky collectors.
people? Let me tell you."

The Best Way to Understand Your Customers
Peter Merholz is a founding partner and president of Adaptive Path, an experience strategy and design firm.

Recently, Sprint Nextel announced that in Q4 2008,
they lost 1.3 million customers. It's tempting to blame the recession,
but then how do you explain AT&T Wireless gaining 2.1 million
subscribers, and Verizon gaining 1.4 million? Forrester's 2008 Customer Experience Index
suggests a reason. Sprint Nextel was far and away the worst-ranked of
the wireless service providers. Out of all the companies (from a range
of industries), Sprint Nextel ranked 108 out of 114. Verizon Wireless
ranked 59th, and AT&T 64th. It's in difficult economic times that customer experience matters most -- you don't want to make it even easier for your customers to walk away because they've been so frustrated working with you.
