How Are Changing Laws And Technology Impacting Storage For Small Businesses?

Data is often the most critical non-human asset a company has, and if data is lost or becomes unavailable it can prove devastating for a business. Related, data security is fast becoming one of the biggest IT challenges facing businesses and recent state and federal government regulations are not only affecting larger companies, but highlighting the importance of a sound data backup, recovery and archive process for small companies as well. Laws such as California SB 1386 mandate businesses, government agencies and nonprofit entities, regardless of size, to publicly disclose when there has been a security breach of certain unencrypted confidential customer information.

The natural first step to securing and protecting data for small businesses is developing a simple backup, recovery and archive process. Believe it or not, Quantum research shows that up to 60% of SMB users are not currently employing what would be considered a best practices approach to data protection. Best practices involve regular backups of data residing on computers and servers, and keeping secure copies of this data at an offsite location for disaster recovery purposes. The good news is there are many new technology options to help small business cost-effectively employ some simple best practices for data protection and as a major step towards compliance with regulations.

A San Francisco start-up wants to make it easier to build large-scale Web applications using cheap servers and popular open-source software.

On Tuesday, it announced that it has landed $3 million in initial funding for its products from Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Allegis Capital.

Mitchell Kertzman, a partner at Hummer Winblad and former CEO of Liberate Technologies, and Jean-Louis Gassée, general partner at Allegis and former CEO of Be, will sit on ActiveGrid's board.

Health Info Seekers Start with Search

JULY 18, 2007

Nearly two-thirds of US online healthcare consumers click on search results because the results are relevant, according to JupiterResearch's "US Online Health Consumer Survey, 2007: Understanding Search Behavior" report. By contrast, only 16% of healthcare consumers clicked on search results based on the trustworthiness of the source or author.

Only 19% of online health users used favorite Web sites in their searches. The majority usually researched through search engines, without a specific destination in mind.

Monique Levy of Jupiter said, "Publishers targeting the online health audience have to focus on search engine marketing to build and maintain traffic — only the well-established players like WebMD and the portal channels can rely on loyalty to some degree.

"Also, marketers needn't worry about trust," Ms. Levy added. "There is little evidence that trust issues are a barrier to online health-related activity or engagement as only 3% of online health users believe most health information found on the Internet is untrustworthy."
